Flow deviation and critical choking in transonic turbine cascades operating with non-ideal compressible flows

In this work we examine the flow deviation and its relationship to critical choking, i.e., choking of meridional component velocity, in transonic turbine cascades operating with non-ideal compressible flows. To purpose, a generalized expression corrected per unit area as function both thermodynamic state molecular complexity working fluid, Mach number, amount swirl is derived. The trends respect these quantities are used infer physical insights on operability off-design conditions. Moreover, reduced-order models for estimation preliminary assessment losses have been developed validated against results CFD simulations performed representative stator. Results suggest that flows dense organic vapors exhibit larger deviations than those pertaining compounds made simple molecules, e.g., air. Furthermore, turbines expanding reach conditions at lower numbers ones affected by dissipation due viscous mixing.
